Updated Background:

Vanitas returns in Kingdom Hearts 3 as a member of the true Organization 13 post his defeat to Ventus. It's unclear how he's taken directly after his death/defeat but there is a vessel provided for him. Due to his defeat from Ventus he is still in a weakened state and searches for a way to fully restore his heart or at least get it back to the state it was before his last fast.
Due to being made of pure darkness and negativity, he is drawn to Monstropolis thanks to encountering Randall in his searching. With learning Monstopolis use to be powered by the screams of children and how/why Randall was banished from the corporation, Vanitas decides to aid Randall in returning to Monstropolis to get his revenge so he can use the negativity from children to restore his own heart.

Using Randall as a pawn, the two infiltrate Monster Inc by using Vanitas' Unversed and sending them through doorways to scare children to collect their frightened screams and negative emotions. Vanitas had also convinced Randall that a if a child's heart was broken over something very precious to them, there would be a limitless source of negativity. He reaffirms the monster's beliefs that scream power is much more reliable and stronger than that of laughter and joy which only encourages Randal further.

However, despite his best efforts, Randall and the Unversed are unable to defeat Sora and gang. Randall is banished once again. But just before the gang returns Boo to her home, Vanitas reappears to confront Sora upon feeling Ventus' sleeping heart inside him. He explains to Sora that Ventus is inside him and is the missing piece that Vanitas is looking for to complete his own heart. His presence alone has Ventus' heart inside Sora reacting to him. But before Vanitas can extract Ventus' heart from Sora, he is grabbed by Sulley and gets ~~yeeted~~ thrown through a door and then that door through multiple doorways.

Vanitas later returns and encounters the group in the Land of Departure where Sora and Aqua are trying to awaken Ventus. He taints them in his usual fashion and ends up in a fight with Aqua. Despite her weakened state she does manage to hold him off to an extent until he starts aiming for Ventus. Knowing she would react, he takes advantage of her good heart and uses it as a chance to finish her off similarly to their last encounter back in Birth By Sleep.

Its as he's standing over her with his keyblade held up over her heart that it triggers enough of a reaction out of Ventus and Sora for the two to use the power of Waking. Sora releases Ventus' heart and in a burst of light Ventus is awakened and flies at Vanitas to save Aqua just in time.

Not wanting to take on three guardians of light, Vanitas leaves since he's sure he'll see Ventus again very soon.

The last encounter with Vantias is in the Keyblade Graveyard with Master Xehanort and the other Norts. They summon a huge army of Heartless, Unversed and Nobodies to weaken and exhaust the guardians of light. Vanitas fight alongside Terra-Xehanort against Aqua and Ventus. They two seem to be pushing the heroes of light back until Sora joins the fight.

Once again, Vanitas is defeated. The right half of his helmet breaks off and revealing part of his face to Sora and Ventus. While this isn't a surprise to Ventus as he is the only one to see Vanitas' true face it does shock Sora. Vanitas goes on to explain that they look alike because of Sora's connection to Ventus and because Sora's heart is replacing him as the missing piece of Ventus' heart and thus make them like brothers who make a greater whole. Before Sora can demand more answers, Ventus cuts him off to talk to Vanitas himself. Despite their best efforts to get Vanitas to join their side and that hes more than just darkness, Vanitas refuses the olive branch and says that he is darkness and he does stand by their side as their shadow and how much closer could he be than that? Vanitas stays firm in his decision and the fate he's chosen for himself despite Sora's protest. Ventus seems more accepting of it and Vanitas vanishes.

Updated Personality:

His personality hasn't changed too much other than seeming a bit more in control of himself. One of the main things that has changed in his desires is that he seems to of lost hope or interest in forging the x-blade with Ventus. In BBS, forging the x-blade was Vanitas major driving force. His purpose for existing was to make Ventus stronger so they could forge the x-blade and Vanitas saw that of being his only way of salvation. In Kh3 that doesn't seem to be the case. Its hard to tell if Master Xehnanort explained that it wasn't possible or his last defeat to Ventus was proof enough of that.

While forming the x-blade doesn't really seem to be of interest to Vanitas anymore, there is still a heavy desire to be one with his light as he is still after Ventus' heart through out and even tries to take him from Sora. In the grand scheme of things, given that they need seven guardians of light, taking Ventus' heart at that point doesn't really fall in line with Xehanort's plans. This shows Vanitas still has his own goals. Ventus is still an obsession.

But with his defeat, Vanitas seems calmer and much more accepting of it than his last defeat at the hands of Ventus. He doesn't struggle at all. Despite Sora and Ventus both reaching out to him, he chooses his fate and chooses darkness because that's what he is. Vanitas admits there's a bond between Ventus, himself and Sora and explains that he's the shadow that their light casts so how much closer to their side could he be? He doesn't so much turn down the offer as much as he decides to take his own path and see it through as darkness. He's already on their side, in his own way.

Ventus and Vanitas also seem to reach a bit more of an understanding of each other, accepting what the other is.
